Gillard for PM

There’s been a bit of a theme running across the majority of the mainstream media for the past several weeks…namely that Kevin Rudd is desperately unpopular in the electorate and the caucus wants to replace him with Julia Gillard.

From memory, this all started with a Newspoll.  Out of the blue several weeks ago one of the Newspolls (owned by News Ltd) included a question about Julia Gillard as leader of the ALP.  Naturally, this got reported in in the Australian and they obviously liked the reaction they got because it’s been hell for leather on this meme ever since.

There’s only been a few other whispers about this, but they’ve gradually been getting louder and louder until over the weekend the “story” finally broke.  Apparently the ALP caucus was very unhappy with Rudd and Gillard had the numbers.  True to News Ltd reporting standards, this came from “ALP sources”.

It had all the hallmarks of being the next great beat-up until lo and behold, someone actually from the ALP comes out and says there’s no such issue.  This despite the fact that Julia had repeatedly said she’s not interested.  Now maybe they’re still used to the Costello way of doing things, like deny it and then leak to your media buddies that you were promised it ages ago and why doesn’t the old fart step down, but they seem a bit lost that the ALP doesn’t have the knives out after 3 or 4 bad polls.

Of course being News Ltd they think they are part of the news instead of just reporting it, so expect it to ratchet up a notch or two as we get closer to the election.

Hi MS. I think we all have the same agenda, which is to spill the truth rather than plug it up as the MSM repeatedly do.

The blogs are the only place I can be assured of getting the full news these days. Being based in Brisbane the only choice I have for a newspaper is the Curious Snail and Sunday Snail, and I stopped buying them a couple of months ago…every story had some sort of anti-government slant and the lengths they went to to apply that slant were quite amazing.
The final straw was a front page story comparing the cost of a $250K school building with that of a house for the same price…talk about comparing apples and oranges. No mentions at all of the different building codes, just a simple leach off the Oz campaign.
